For the past few years only one pair of geese nest on the reserve .... normally on the island in front of the hide.... and the gander aggressively chases off any other geese that come any where near the pond. This provides quite a spectacular display of air combat. Most often the gander chases the interlopers off without contact but if he gets close enough in-flight he grabs their tail feathers, back-pedals his wings and tries to bring the interloper to the ground.
This shot he has grabbed a female goose and is trying to pull her down..... she got away unharmed eventually.

Sparrowhawks are regular visitors at Cathkin Marsh and have favourite perches where they sit, watch and wait for any sign of prey. With a bit of patience (sometimes a lot) and careful observation you can pre-empt when they are about to take flight. Burst of shots composited later in photoshop
