Tawny Owl Owlet in Nest: Tawny Owl, 09-06-2020, Bob Hamilton, Dalzell Estate, Motherwell, Clyde
I must stress that, despite being extremely careful with the taking of this image, not only because I did not want to disturb the nest but also out of consideration for my own personal safety, such is the reputation Tawny Owls have when guarding their nests, because of the understandable sensitivity surrounding nest sites, I debated long and hard whether or not I should submit this image for inclusion in The Gallery. I quite literally stumbled upon this nest in early June 2020. The nest was in an old Sycamore tree, situated not much further than 20 yards away from a very busy path through the woods and one, which, in the middle of the first 2020 Covid-19 lockdown, was extremely busy with walkers, joggers and cyclists. The image of the owlet looking out of the nest was taken from over 50 yards away, using an extremely high resolution, full frame digital camera of 61 megapixels and a 600mm telephoto lens. The resulting image, when cropped down to the size required for inclusion in The Gallery, made the effective focal length of the lens some 1,500mm. For the reasons given above and because of the very busy nature of the nearby path, next to which I was standing, I stayed near the nest site for not much longer than 5 minutes, as I did not want it to attract unwelcome public attention. There were 2 owlets in the nest, both of which fledged a couple of days later, one of which I spotted sheltering nearby in a dense thicket of Yew trees.
