Lunch: Sparrowhawk, 14-01-2022, Colin MacConnachie, Gullane Point, Aberlady, Lothian
I had been sitting on the rocks on the top of Gullane Point, East Lothian for a while before I noticed a raptor sitting motionless further along at the end of the point about 25 metres away from me. I decided that he was either very sick or was focusing intently on something.
I approached quietly and I managed to get to within 10 feet of him (recognising the bird as a male sparrow hawk). He was peering intently over the edge of the rocks at the shoreline some twenty feet below towards some oystercatchers and a turnstone.
Suddenly he launched off the cliff and I thought he had seen me but as I watched he stooped at the turnstone which had taken flight. He knocked it into the sea then promptly dived down and with a huge splash retrieved the hapless turnstone who had sunk below the waves before flying back to where I had been sitting ten minutes previously. He was reluctant to fly off as the turnstone was still struggling but eventually he flew onto the next headland and then off into the buckthorn thickets.
While all this was going on I had managed to grab the camera from my rucsac - the settings were random with a ridiculously low speed and duff aperture and the focus point was way off-centre … however I was lucky to retrieve three decent pictures amongst a lot of blurred action!

upon hearing the call "Duck!" I was half expecting the follow up of " its just a seagull!" luckily I turned around just in time to quickly point the camera towards these two splendid mallard's as they flew pass at close quarters and perfectly capture the moment as if by chance!
